EL LLANO DE LAS BARRERAS

Being there

"El llano de las Barreras" is the perfect place from which to explore this beautiful area and the completely rural environment where it is set.

Whether you decide to spend the day reading in the shade of a tall orange tree, refreshed by a pretty fountain, splashing in its large and inviting swimming pool or shopping for crafts in the nearby whitewashed villages and dining out.

Everything is possible in this priviledged place, which is:

  • Just 1 minute to Orgiva, the main town in the western Alpujarras. Its landscape and people have been skillfully depicted by the British musician and writer Chris Stewart in his book " Driving over Lemons". It is worth paying a visit to its Church, an ancient mosque rebuilt in 1580 or the new townhall, a former XVIII palace belonging to the Count of Sástago.

  • 10 minutes to Lanjarón, the famous spa town with healing waters, where you can find complementary water therapists to help you to relax.

  • 15 minutes to the first of villages of the High Alpujarra, where everything seems to be at its own pace of life. Many of these pretty villages date back to Moorish times. Their whitewashed streets and the slate roofs described by the British writer Gerald Brenan in "South from Granada" watch out the new interested visitor. Las Alpujarras is famous for its typical cuisine such as
"papas a lo pobre" (a mixture of fried potatoes with onions, green pepper, eggs and local sausages), "migas de semola" ( similar to couscous ) or "jamón de Trevélez" ( cured ham ).

  • It is a 40 minutes drive to the pleasant coastal towns of Almuñecar or Motril, which has lots of lovely beaches and many natural resorts.

  • Just 30 minutes to cultural city of Granada, where the visitor will be enchanted by the citadel of the Alhambra, literally "The red fortress", the most famous complex of Arabic palaces and gardens in Europe. He will enjoy "flamenco" alive in the cave district of Sacromonte, still occupied by gypsies. A visit to The Albaicín, the old Moorish quarter depicted by the writer Alain Maalouf in his novel "Leon the African" is a must. A visit to "La huerta de San Vicente", where the famous poet Federico García Lorca spent his summer holidays should not be missed.

  • 1 hour to the ski resort of Sierra Nevada, one of the highest in Europe, which provides a season beginning in December and lasting until April.
